The price you see on this page and the price a jeweller quotes you are two different numbers — here is why, and how to read both.
India does not mine enough gold to meet demand, so the domestic rate starts from the international spot price and then carries the cost of getting metal to a counter here: a fixed import duty, the rupee-dollar exchange rate on the day, and the premium or discount at which banks sell to dealers. That is the "base rate" every city rate on this site is built from — the same arithmetic that jewellers use.
Two numbers matter when you shop. The base rate above is what a gram of metal is worth before anyone has worked on it. The making charge is the jeweller's charge for crafting — it varies by design, city and shop, and it is where prices differ most between two jewellers quoting the same rate. GST applies on top of both. Our gold calculator breaks a quoted price into these three parts so you can see what you are actually paying for metal versus workmanship.
New here? The guides are a good next step: why your jeweller's price differs from the online rate, how making charges and GST work, and why the Indian price differs from the international one.
