How to read exchange rates like a pro
Every currency figure on this page is a reference rate — the benchmark banks quote between themselves, not the rate you get at a counter.
- ECB reference rates are fixed once per ECB business day at ~16:00 CET. They move markets, but intraday moves won’t show until the next fix.
- Your bank’s card rate adds a margin (often 2–4%) plus GST on the margin — that spread is where exchange fees hide.
- Why it matters for gold: Indian gold is priced in dollars first. A weaker rupee raises the rupee gold price even when world gold is flat — our USD/INR & gold guide works through the maths.
